Tears were shed when Hollywood video sold their only copy in a video sale and we missed it. A copy will be procured from ebay or something-- probably for Kaeli's birthday.

I thought I would enjoy this, but it definatly feel below expectations. Even Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland couldn't save it. Its cute, sortof, but definatly not entertaining enough. At best, its a nice movie.

this movie is fucking disturbing on so many levels. 1. mickey rooney is the male lead and was the top box office draw in 1939. fucking weird. 2. so much blackface. 3. the insane "god's country" number. 4. weird opera singing vs. conversational microphone singing. despite all this, the movie is entertaining. the songs are strange, especially for a musical like this, but somehow appealing. the subtle jabs at hitler and non-allies are humorous and witty. overall, not one of busby berkeley's best, but only because he had to focus on stars instead of the crazy geometric figures for which he is famous.

Musicals all too often have a plot of nostalgia, and this one is no different: children of vaudeville write a show about the great days of vaudeville, complete with derogatory Indian caricatures & even a blackface number. Mickey Rooney is a comic impersonator, though, and I could listen to Judy Garland sing all day long. Busby Berkeley is one of the truly great directors of musical numbers, but I feel he lacks the skills to direct an entire feature. Oh well...
