Avalon strikes me as a "what-if" project between Mamoru Oshii and Krystof Kiezslowski, or Ghost In The Shell meets The Three Colors Trilogy, La Double Vie de Veronique, where the Maj. Kusanagi-type stand-in is filled by an actress, remeniscent of Irene Jacob, with the metaphysical/metafictional looks of French New Wave starlet, Anna Karina.

This is the best Polish sci-fi film directed by a Japanese man of all time. The special effects may be a little low by some standards, but they do the work that is needed. The story is great and it avoids a lot of the stupid turns that show up in plots dealing with computers and virtual reality. I also really like the song "Avalon" that is used repeatedly in the film.

Great Movie!! Visually absolutely astonishing, the music is just marvellous however the storyline is somewhat flat even though the idea behind it is again great. Some might say it is a matrix copy but I don't think so but you can check that out for yourselves ;)

Some might think that a film set partly in an immersive video game future and partly in the bleakest, CG-assisted, sepia-toned Poland imaginable is a bit of a tough sell. I'll grant you that, but "Avalon" is a fantastic film and one which deserves to be seen by as many people as possible. Whether they'll dig it as much as I did is another matter. This is grown-up, fantastic SF with a wonderful hint of 60's Euro New Wave and more than a touch of dread about it. Art House SF at it's best - more please!

Very cool movie for those of us who like video games. A great futuristic setting with fantastic visuals. This movie suffers from little outside of a bit of a retreaded theme/storyline(like the Matrix) and bad voice overs/dubbing. Malgorzata is a great new find for this one as well. She does a great job as Ash, a professional underground videogamer in the downtrodden streets of an eastern block country. I won't spoil the rest, because it is fun to follow. Rent this.
