With every film he creates, Wes Anderson gets more self-consciously affected and less rewarding. Most of the action takes place in the titular desert outpost, but he uses a play with useless narration as a framing device  (presented by period-stiff announcer Bryan Cranston). Anderson, has gone for a sun-drenched retro-futuristic 50s vibe, but the stiff performances and pause-laden pacing only serve to distance the audience from everything. The visuals are bright and appealing, but every actor is so burdened with deadpan delivery they seem like automatons repeating absurdities. With his preciously-staged, precisely mounted moments Anderson's formal, stiff style is more like a museum exhibit than a cinematic comedy.

Freight train freight train, going so fast. Very good movie, especially the visuals.

Maybe the whole endeavor is some kind of self-portrait of an artist who doesn’t know what he wants to say anymore, or how to even say, “I don’t know how to say what I want to say anymore.”

More so than with some of his recent films, like “The French Dispatch,” or even such earlier celebrated works as “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” not only did I marvel at its color-coordinated craftsmanship, but I also found parts of it to be emotionally moving – a rarity in the Anderson canon.

Asteroid City is a top-tier Wes Anderson original that brings back the carefree fun and charm of some of his best works while also turning his own personal conventions on their ear in an attempt to try new things.
