Emotionally gratifying, it dramatically only crawls along with so many actionless scenes.

I found this medical melodrama boring, but if that's what you like maybe you'll enjoy it. There are good actors, but my favourite, Myrna Loy, doesn't get much screen time. I wish this movie would have told the audience when it was taking place, it didn't seem like the thirties. I don't know, I was really confused, but mostly bored.

INSPIRING STORY, WELL ACTED BY RONALD COLMAN, BUT IT LACKS SPARK, STILL WORTH WATCHING THOUGH.

The first half is ludicrously old fashioned, but the 2nd half is very progressive by 1930s standards. There are some beautiful moments here. The casual film goer would probably be bored stiff, but if you're a lover of old Hollywood, there's plenty to love here.

One of John Ford's in-depth probes of the doctor's role in society, Arrowsmith was based on the novel by Sinclair Lewis who refused the 1926 Pulitzer because of the prize's alleged advocacy of work that endorsed "the wholesome American life."
