Archenemy (2020)

Max Fist claims he's a hero from another dimension who has somehow landed on Earth and been stripped of his powers. Instead of treating him like a powerful champion, no one believes Max's claims — except for a teenager named Hamster and his sister Indigo. The siblings convince Max to help them take out a local drug gang, where Max's abilities are put to a violent and harrowing test.

Mortimer, coming off his critically-acclaimed and award-winning debut Daniel Isn't Real, never quite strikes a tone or a pace that suits his tale of a (potentially) fractured mind.

Joe Manganiello must be desperate for own franchise….can’t think any other reason he’d align himself with this disaster. He plays a homeless drunk who maintains that he’s actually from another planet in a parallel universe and has super powers. An eager young online journalist and his sister get involved with him after they anger the wrong people. Anyone hoping for a typical superhero movie will be gravely disappointed. This is a dark, gritty crime drama with lots of sci-fi physics jabberwocky. The action is minimal and when it does appear, it's not special. To make matters worse, what could have been cool otherworld excursions (and exposition) are presented in low-budget, unattractive animation. There is absolutely nothing to recommend this talky, cheap-looking, unfocused and uninteresting mess.

Writer/director Adam Egypt Mortimer is clearly a movie-mad soul, and if he can get a little further out from under his influences he may concoct something a more consistently geekily transportive.
