Archenemy (2020)

Max Fist claims he's a hero from another dimension who has somehow landed on Earth and been stripped of his powers. The dialogue has its moments, but the jokes are too sparse to buttress the arch, comic book camp tone Mr. Adam Egypt Mortimer was going for. And while the wigs are fabulous and the effects interesting, it’s all something of a hash. Coherent enough, sure, but making sense of it seems like a fool’s errand, start to finish.

This was a really ambitious movie that would have benefitted from toning it down rather than playing into the cheesiness of it all. The animated scenes scattered throughout really mess with the pacing and take away from developing other parts of the story. The action scenes are featured at a bare minimum (this is largely a drama) and are very simple and uninspired. Really, This just isn't a good movie. The script had potential but it wasn't as well thought out as it could have been. Having such a small budget didn't help things either.

What you’re left with is a mixed bag of colorful, bizarro superhero world-building and threadbare characters that leaves the viewer with little-to-no interest in what happens next.

Jack Wilhelmi 10 Dec 2020

The movie's superhero-laden backbone is meant to support a deeper message. Adam Egypt Mortimer's Archenemy is a painful reminder of how society fails people, and bleeds colorful nuance and thematic messaging in every frame.

Richard Whittaker 11 Dec 2020

Mortimer, coming off his critically-acclaimed and award-winning debut Daniel Isn't Real, never quite strikes a tone or a pace that suits his tale of a (potentially) fractured mind.
