Applause has given me a new found appreciation for foreign films everywhere. The main character, played by Paprika Steen, is a one of a kind actress; she can light up the screen, no matter the scene, with her energy and passion for the arts. The film only has a select few characters, and that is all it needs to explain such a moving story about a woman trying to better herself as a mother and a human being. Applause is definitely a film for those you can value a strong foreign film, such as this one.

A strange film where horrendous acting is wrapped inside layers of sheer technical genious, particularly in the sound department. One of the forerunners of sound cinema, Mamoulian's tragic melodrama works because of a carefully structured script and scenes of enveloping entertainment. It's hard to imagine the kind of impact this revolutionary "sound perspective" had on movie-goers, but the work that went into the craft is still impressive today, along with the sucker punch finale of the story.

A very powerful, tragic movie with an amazing performance by Paprika Steen. I always like boozy foreigners!

'Applause' is a moving movie that everyone should go and see. Danish actress Paprika Steen does an impressive portrayal of recovering alcoholic stage performer Thea Barfoed whose past battles with alcohol have cost her not only her marriage but access to her two sons. Throughout the movie we watch Thea struggle to remain sober while trying to reclaim custody of her sons. Thea tries to have an unsedated existence, but unfortunately everywhere she turns she's surrounded by demons from her past. 'Applause' leaves you wanting more and curious to see what director Martin Pieter Zandvliet will do next.

I saw it at a screening recently and Paprika's performance was absolutely phenomenal. It is a really good movie.
