Anvil! The Story of Anvil (2008)

At 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the "demi-gods of Canadian metal" influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams.

Top fucking notch!!! From start to finish an absolute riot - because it's real. Here we have 50-odd year-old guys relentlessly and aimlessly following a dream that one day it will happen. It is painfully obvious why there act hasn't taken them anywhere except to lipps and robb. It's excellent to see to friends fall in and out with each without any real reason other than being pissed off that life's such a struggle when they are together...especially on tour and recording this is thirteen! Brilliant brilliant brilliant!!!!

Phenomenal documentary. One of the few films that can be heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. It's deceptively funny, relatable, charming. Made with just the right combination of realism and reverence. Steve "Lips" Kudlow is the most passionate, engaging, and lovable character I've seen in quite some time.

As far from Spinal Tap as you can get, apart from the obvious rock references. A funny, touching look at the brevity of life, expertly edited (Lips' lasagne monologue is a clever introduction to a character) and an inspiration to seize the day, whether you like the music or not.

Beautiful, fucking tragic and totally inspirational. Like a real life Heavy Metal version of The Wrestler, this is the best rockumentary EVER!

From start to finish, the documentary had me. I would best describe it as part American Movie and part Spinal Tap. It is the story of a Canadian metal band that never quite made it, yet still strives to be on top even though the band founders have hit mid-life. It is hard to not be fascinated by the lead singer Lips and his wide-eyed, eternal optimism. This is one of the best movies I have seen this year.
