One America is Dvorak's, from his American String Quartet No. 12, composed in 1893. The other is mine, culled from found images of the America born from the moving image.

I dont know if its the personal aspect that inspired Kazan to film this movie but whatever is the reason this film is an absolute masterpiece. Deeped in the characters but at the same time an epic story. Its message remains so modern. Even if more decades pass America America will always be the story of every man who is looking for a better life, it will be the story of imigrants from all over the world.

The ultimate Greek spirit, and Hadjidakis' score is one of the 2-3 best soundtracks ever

Un grand classique, comme un grand nombre de films de Kazan. Je l'avais vu lorsque j'étais adolescente, je l'ai revu hier avec grand plaisir.

Se parece bastante al rollo de emigración que hay hoy. Sólo han pasado 100 años.

How many other films from the last 50 years have earned the three big nominations of Picture, Director and Screenplay and remain so completely unknown? Elia Kazan's deeply personal and epic tale of struggle, heartbreak, and dreams is an engrossing, altogether unique depiction of the immigrant's journey. At the same time it can be difficult to watch and is sometimes crudely constructed and acted. Its deficiencies are swamped though by its virtues, not the least of which is Haskell Wexler's amazing black-and-white photography.
