Aluna (2012)

Twenty years ago Alan Ereira's influential television film From The Heart of the World: The Elder Brothers' Warning brought global attention to the Kogi people of Colombia, a remote and ancient South American civilization determined to caution us about environmental damage to the earth. Now, two decades later and convinced that their message has gone unheeded, the next generation of Kogi are reaching out to the world once more with a much more specific warning about the future of the planet.

Although it carries a powerful and meaningful message for the modern technology obsessed, western world, the film is not always entirely coherent in its structure. Alan Ereira plays here the fish out of water but somehow his approach with logic and facts fails to have the impact it should, maybe because, the Kogis sees life with a total different logic than the one we have been taught in schools. Fascinating nevertheless, the film will undoubtedly catch your attention and demonstrate a true desire to share a cultural experience through this journey.

it was interesting to become aware of the existence of the cogi tribe and learn about how they viewed and lived in the world, but this film didn't offer much of that. instead, it was a preachy and on-the-nose "save-the-environment" flick that managed to simultaneously patronize both the cogi and its western viewers. i felt like there was great room here for artistry or authenticity, but the final product was little more than the most bland sense of the word "documentary".
