All Is Lost (2013)

During a solo voyage in the Indian Ocean, a veteran mariner awakes to find his vessel taking on water after a collision with a stray shipping container. With his radio and navigation equipment disabled, he sails unknowingly into a violent storm and barely escapes with his life. With any luck, the ocean currents may carry him into a shipping lane -- but, with supplies dwindling and the sharks circling, the sailor is forced to face his own mortality.

As far as disaster movies go, it's fairly average. All the same beats are fit and the same formula follows through. Here's the thing though. What makes it stand out is the lack of almost any dialogue. It gives it that extra sense of realism. If you were in that situation, you wouldn't keep saying these great big monologues that nobody can hear. You'd be trying your best just to survive. An "actor's movie" is a term that gets thrown around to describe a movie with little action and where the entirety of it is solely about an actors performance usually through powerful dialogue. Yet, Robert Redford's performance in what is essentially a one man show, make this one of the most effective and watchable "actor's movies" of all time. Not to mention the movie's star is a senior citizen. How rare is that for an action movie? Well after this, maybe we need more sixty year men being given the lead roles in these kind of movies. Wilford Brimley for the next James Bond I say!

I've seen this movie on DVD at least 30 times. I think this movie epitomizes the self absorbed lifestyle we tend to lead today. I think this is Redford's finest movie. Without nearly a word, Redford is able to express a sentiment in life that most multimillion dollar, mega-special effect movies generally can't do, tell a good life story. Most who may watch this movie and think this movie is about a boat sinking, don't get it. In my mind, the movie is a metaphor for and about life, specifically about those who live life, become ultra successful, are type-A personalities, and go about a narcissistic lifestyle. The movie illuminates a commonality, you can't save yourself from life's ultimate end, death. The main question to answer in the movie is whether you want to get to the end alone or do you want to rely on the help of others. To answer this question, you don't need memorable dialog or catchy phrases. Just intelligent movie making and a great performance by a great actor. This movie is a must see.

the most excruciating and heat wearing 106 minutes I've ever sat through. it was good, but torturous.

All Is Lost written and directed by JC Chandor presents us with Our Man played by Robert Redford and his fight to survive after his boat hits a shipping container and the entire film is about his grueling fight to survive against the forces of nature and it's awesome. Robert Redford gives us one of his best performances as a man who we never learn anything about we never even learn his name but we're rooting for him to survive the entire way through and it also explores what happens when a man feels defeated does he give up or does he keep going? This is a great film and it's a thought provoking film as well that i think is really great
