Alfred the Great (1969)

While Old England is being ransacked by roving Danes in the 9th century, Alfred is planning to join the priesthood. But observing the rape of his land, he puts away his religious vows to take up arms against the invaders, leading the English Christians to fight for their country. I am a fan of historic dramas but this one is pretty boring. OK as a history lesson but not great as a dramatic movie. Just drifts along from start to finish. Even the battle scenes are fairly dull. The cinematography could be better too - the picture was lacking in colour, clarity and resolution (though this may be a bad transfer to DVD).

There's a dejected feeling about this whole cinematic folly, as though somewhere along the way it had lost confidence even in its own anachronisms.

All I can say, if this is the true story of Alfred the Great, I'll be a monkey's uncle.

Another Brit movie that I have always enjoyed AND wish it would be released on DVD.
