Alexander's Ragtime Band (1938)

Classical violinist Roger Grant disappoints his family and teacher when he organizes a jazz band, but he and the band become successful. Roger falls in love with the band's singer, Stella, but his reluctance to lose her leads him to thwart her efforts to become a solo star. When the World War separates them in 1917, Stella marries Roger's best friend and, when Roger returns home after the war, an important concert at Carnegie Hall brings the corners of the romantic triangle together.

This film is average. Alice Fay has a good singing voice. However, she can not act at all. This film is ok. There are so many excellent musicals out there. This isn't one of them.

Exemplary Fox musical spans thirty years (and the stars never age!) and just about as many Irving Berlin tunes ("Now It Can Be Told" was nominated for an Oscar).

Okay musical from the 30s about a guy (soon to be called Alexander) who forms a ragtime band. Not too bad, the first half is pretty good, but then it drags on for a while. I did enjoy the finale though, even though it was pretty predictable. Tyrone Power, Alice Faye, and Don Ameche make a nice trio (it was fun seeing a young Ameche act and sing). Some good songs throughout, but I felt the film could have been shorter.
