It's a rather long but very impressive drama. WOW.

I always find gauging acting in subtitled films to be a bit difficult. One is never quite sure how the dialogue feels unless one fully understands the language. Not that I am complaining about the acting here. But in the end, for me, it is the writing and the structure of the film that impress me most and which I find most enjoyable and satisfying. Playing with a slightly fractured time-line and in chapter form, it makes a very interesting watch in an efforts to show both sides of the conflict between the Arab and Jewish communities as well as between middle and lower classes. The film draws you in slowly but once it is in, and parts of it can be a tad soapy, but as mentioned earlier, it is a rewarding journey that it takes you through and 2 hours flew by.

Corruption and crime in a society of vulnerable members, Jews, Muslims and Christians, equally. Five stories intertwined in Ajami, a mixed neighborhood in Tel Aviv, where everyday life suddenly turns into drama, with pessimism and confusion the lives of families who would not have any contact, otherwise. Magnificent human film where non actors bring realism rarely seen and makes it a unique movie experience. At times one may wonder why are they were shouting all the time -- it's a necessary exercise of emotional freedom. All the awards, nominations, and positive reviews are perfectly deserved.

Suzanne and I were very moved by this film on people in Israel. Muslims, Jews and Christians in a very complicated, tragic, though very real story. Highly recommended. (Warning for my conservative family members, though: reading subtitles required. Oh, I think I'm in trouble again!:)
