I do not think the drama is engaging enough to give the audience a surprise on the humanity that Ihei possessed.

I also watched it on Arte, not knowing. It's really a great movie, with a calm, relaxing atmosphere, and Ihei, the main character, is an adorable person in this movie.

Beautiful and Sensitive Feel-Good Movie - A Great Homage to Master Akira Kurosawa

A tribute to the master Kurosawa. It uses his last screenplay as a template and builds a story of a masterless samurai. Unlike Kurosawa's films, this fails to have a dramatic emotional connection with the audience. It is also very slow and lacks entertainment. It is a sweet and quiet film with much to take in. It's nice to see the likes of Toshiro Mifune's son paying tribute. Overall you get a very slow Samurai tale, with long talking sections and enthralling, but short, fight scenes.

A sweet. quiet and small film of a ronin who almost finds a home. It's more of a morality tale about the ronin's perspective on the world than the typical samurai plot.
