The casting, performances and writing are all perfect. The character Nolte plays is perfectly tailored to his style of acting and it's jaw dropping to watch. Coburn's performance is so many big words i don't know. He's such an unpleasant character, just full of bitterness and wants to do nothing but dominate everyone even his own family! Schrader's script is truly something to behold here. The characters in his movies don't mirror my own life at all but he does such a brilliant job of making every character easy to relate to that they stay with me long after i've seen them and Affliction is no exception.

The plot of the film isn't super strong, but the movie as a whole is incredibly intense. Nick Nolte gets progressively more and more deranged, and he absolutely kills it alongside James Coburn. The two play off of each other really well, and the madness that ensues is perfectly executed.

I kind of love this admittedly flawed film. What do I think is flawed? Largely the narrative, which is far from bad, but at times makes a bit less sense than it should. More than once it really feels like a book compressed into the length of a feature film, and you can sense that bits of the plot are missing. Along similar lines, while Dafoe's narration is occasionally on point, it often feels like it was dropped in because the screenwriter couldn't figure out any other way to introduce some idea from the book that felt crucial. So, why do I love it? Because the central performances in this film are incredible and they all serve what I think is Schrader's biggest interest in making the film ... focusing on the legacy of violence. Coburn towers over this film afraid of nothing and nobody. Nolte embodies a small boy reacting to perceived injustices with no control over his anger. Dafoe is withdrawn, but supports Nolte beyond the bounds of reason due to a bond forged in their traumatic childhood. I could watch these three perform these parts with no story at all.

The story unfolds in seemingly predictable manner, but however is shuted aside for a deeper meaning. Up front a murder mystery that is just a setting for a man's demise in the shadow of his alcoholic father as his life goes up in flames.
