A listless thriller that can’t find its footing, Abandoned does occasionally rouse itself enough to suggest a better movie that never comes to pass.

This is a very slow-moving work that leans heavily on auditory scares rather than visual ones, the whole akin to sleep-deprivation torture.

It's been a while since I've seen a film so lacking in suspense and fear, especially when it's advertised and sold as a story of both genres. Yes there is also something in the plot about postpartum depression, but clearly this was intended just to be about a haunting and it fails miserably. And what a bland actress Emma Roberts is. Almost 95% of her films are utterly meaningless, but I still don't understand how she lands so many leading roles.

Ultimately, neither Squire nor Roberts nor Gallagher Jr. really puts a foot wrong in this movie, but that’s chiefly because the whole thing is standing still.

The Erik Patterson and Jessica Scott script is laughably generic, and even the potentially alarming moments are given a cut-rate handling by director Spencer Squire, who hopefully resented the fact that the production didn’t even have money for spectral effects.
