This is a thoroughly entertaining film which cleverly draws attention to the mythological nature of personal and national histories. The story is framed as a documentary, narrated by the older Dehousse (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant), his memories rich in period detail, yet Audiard constantly reminds us that this is a fiction with moments of fantasy, stylized sequences and by cutting back to the chamber ensemble who provide the musical soundtrack. Excellent.

A thoroughly enjoyable film, hilarious and not mere fluff. The interviews add a playful touch of 'realism'.
