A Long Way Down (2014)

Four lost souls—a disgraced TV presenter, a foul-mouthed teen, an isolated single mother, and a failed musician—decide to end their lives on the same night, New Year's Eve. When this disillusioned quartet of strangers meet unintentionally at the same suicide hotspot, a London high-rise with the well-earned nickname Topper's Tower, they mutually agree to call off their plans for six weeks, forming an unconventional, dysfunctional family. They become media sensations as the Topper House Four and search together for reasons to keep on living.

I enjoyed it, and I find myself hanging onto it, but mostly because of the interesting combination of its cast members, and the way they communally grapple with hopelessness.

This movie is nothing deep nor depressing, so don't fear the subject of suicidal people being it's focus. It's a delightful (yet not probable) story of four lost people that think they have reached the end of their coping abilities with life challenges. After they discover one another a whole new meaning in their humdrum lives opens and the pleasures and conflicts of living start anew. Pascal Chaumeil smartly divides the story into four parts to offer the viewer an insight into each of the four main characters lives. And we see things are never as bad as each of the four imagine. Maybe Maureen's story presents the greatest challenge but she needed this path to discover how much she actually cared about her son. I suggest to anyone that wants a story that is not a love story or an action flick, to grab this movie and enjoy!

It was interesting and an inventive premise with generally good acting. I liked it a lot but the ending was a little anticlimactic

A compasionate look at the human experience and the resiliency of the human heart. A fragile alliance carry our rag tag heroes from Death back to the realm of the living as each while facing their own existential pain are drawn out of themselves in caring for another(s). This alone is worth the price of admission.
