When the beloved cellist of a world-renowned string quartet is diagnosed with a life threatening illness, the group's future suddenly hangs in the balance as suppressed emotions, competing egos and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration. Excellent ensemble performances from a fine cast about a string quartet at the crossroads. Nice too to see Christopher Walken not play a crazy or an eccentric for a change!

Unless you're channeling the forgiving spirit of Casals, I'm afraid this one hits too many off notes to recommend.

I loved this movie. They really do not do movies like this anymore. It shows how difficult it is to produce music or anything as a group given our present reality ego- centricity.

I went into the film not knowing what to expect. I'm not a huge walken fan, but hoffmans performance, as well as keener keeps the movie alive. Walken is very impressive however. It makes for a good drama about friendship, love and music

A film of true, magnetic star power giving weight to a somber but potent script, A Late Quartet adeptly handles themes such as marital infidelity, elitism getting in the way of art, and the power of camaraderie even in the face of illness and death. A standout performance from Christopher Walken really anchors the film, mirroring the role of the second violin in the quartet that holds its all together. The direction was tasteful and not at all stylized. One could tell first time director Zilberman really has a passion for music and fortunately his filmmaking doesn't reflect a tin ear, in fact quite the opposite. Though I would be forewarned, this film in parts is quite a tear jerker and there are several moments which provide artificial laughs that seem out of the place with the tone of the film in general. However, these are minor drawbacks as the resulting film will leave you deeply moved.
