A Gay Girl in Damascus: The Amina Profile (2015)

There is no indication that this typical online flirtation between two strangers would turn into a case of shocking international intrigue. For months, Sandra in Montreal and Amina, a Syrian-American, bond romantically and intellectually. Encouraged by Sandra, Amina launches a blog called "A Gay Girl in Damascus," representing a marginalized voice in the Middle East on politics, religion, and sexuality. This movie struggles to find the focal point of the story. I wish the director would have picked between catfishing, the plight of Syria, and media irresponsibility. There were many times when I thought the movie was going nowhere and there were many scenes that I thought were unnecessary. It could have been told in 30 minutes and it could have been a great pilot for "Catfish - International"

The documentary feels more like a mystery and almost like fiction itself as it unravels the multiple layers behind Amina’s real identity. The revelation is jaw-dropping and infuriating, and the outrage only increases as each additional detail is uncovered.

Sophie Deraspe's film is a compelling anatomy of an Internet hoax.

A compelling and insightful examination of this strange story, and it utilizes the cooperation of Sandra Bagaria, the Canadian woman who had been in a long-distance romantic relationship with Amina (even though the two had never met.)

Deraspe and Bagaria captured my heart and mind on their torturous journey, and the conclusion was far deeper than those opening frames ever alluded to.
