A Field in England (2013)

During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist, who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.

I'd be lying if I said "A Field in England" is a movie that's either accessible to mainstream audiences, or easy to understand, but it's still a well made film that's an incredibly bizarre and trippey slice of British independent cinema. The fact that director Ben Wheatley was able to film such and impressive looking movie with only a 300,000 dollar budget and shot the movie in 12 days is an extremely commendable act on it's own. Wheatley's film also uses lots of surreal and psychedelic imagery and it's probably some of the most impressive technical work I've seen done on a movie with such a small budget in recent independent cinema. This being Ben Whatley's fourth film, he's already demonstrated himself as being quite an impressive force in the British film industry and I eagerly await his arrival into American cinema that is scheduled for next year.

Despite its flaws, A Field in England is an original, adventurous, imaginative, compelling work, a rare enough thing in a British cinema stifled by formulaic scripts and timorous financing entities, to deserve being celebrated.

A gloriously head-spinning trip into a mind, that is at once demented and beautiful. A Field in England is not easy to compartmentalise but it is worth 90 minutes of anybody's time who wants to try.

[A Field in England] demonstrates how genuinely spellbinding cinema can be when it's wielded by an artist who doesn't so much play by his own rules as forego such restrictions entirely.

A brilliant, uncompromising and deliberate experiment set in a very specific time, in a very specific place, and under incredibly specific conditions, A Field in England is a wonderfully bizarre microcosm of abstraction.
