A Field in England (2013)

During the Civil War in 17th-Century England, a small group of deserters flee from a raging battle through an overgrown field. They are captured by an alchemist, who forces the group to aid him in his search to find a hidden treasure that he believes is buried in the field. Crossing a vast mushroom circle, which provides their first meal, the group quickly descend into a chaos of arguments, fighting and paranoia, and, as it becomes clear that the treasure might be something other than gold, they slowly become victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field.

This is the most interesting thing I have seen in a very long time. The exposition is carefully chosen and the script very tight and in places morbidly funny. At no point does it feel like a low budget film, it looks and feels exactly how it should. It will take numerous watches to pick up on everything I think and there will be some things that may never be explained, but one thing is for certain, this director is a true visionary and we will be seeing great things from him.

Well it certainly makes you think. I am not one to shy away from fantastical films where it is hard to make sense of them. I love off kilter films with a dark heart. But there's something missing from A Field In England - it's captivating, gross, decidely weird, yet also straight forward. But unlike Ben Wheatley's other efforts, this one doesn't do it for me particularly. Hmm.

Wheatley's new film is grisly and visceral, an occult, monochrome-psychedelic breakdown taking place somewhere in the West Country during the civil war.
