Nerdy Walter Paisley, a maladroit busboy at a beatnik café who doesn't fit in with the cool scene around him, attempts to woo his beautiful co-worker, Carla, by making a bust of her. When his klutziness results in the death of his landlady's cat, he panics and hides its body under a layer of plaster. But when Carla and her friends enthuse over the resulting artwork, Walter decides to create some bigger and more elaborate pieces using the same artistic process.

Beatnik coffeehouse, The Yellow Door, busboy uses murder as a means to attaining status in the subculture through becoming a sculptor. Very simple and predictable storyline, but enjoyable nonetheless due to Roger Corman's directing and some interesting, borderline comical, acting by some of the cast. Good in a bmovie, beatnik horror comedic satire kitsch sort of a way. Can definitely see the makings of the future Corman and writer Charles Griffin collaboration Little Shop of Horrors here. Short movie only 65:48 running time. Made on a 50k budget, 5 day shoot. Brief drug referrences and violence.

This is my favourite Corman movie of the fifties, I think. The only film where Dick Miller gets to play the main character too. It's both funny and suspenseful. Plus, it's about beatniks. I love this movie.
