good noir-... arguably Karlson's greatest film and certainly his most beautifully brutal... a film driven by the fury of a man who is tired of being life's punching bag.

A year after Kansas City Confidential, Phil Karlson again directs John Payne as a regular Joe getting framed, with a lot of punching along the way. Otherwise, the two films don't have all that much in common, but they're both equal in quality. This one might be a little tighter in construction, actually. I'm not quite sure how I feel about Evelyn Keyes. Sometimes she pulls off some good work, but there were also moments where she didn't seem that hot. Speaking of "hot", the movie gets pretty damn sexy. Nothing like you'd see today, of course, but quite suggestive for 1953. A really solid film that rolls along beautifully.

Reliable director Phil Karlson knocks out another tough solid noir about an ex-boxer, now cabbie, who is framed for the murder of his wife and tries to find the real murderer while on the run from the cops.

a terrific overlooked noir, likely the best film of director phil karlson's career. john payne plays a washed up fighter who's constantly reliving his lost shot at the title, struggling as a cabdriver with a dissatisfied wife. what is it with boxers and noir? needless to say, he gets mixed up in a dangerous game, giving him one last shot at redemption. i don't wanna give too much away. everyone is great here, especially evelyn keyes as a standup dame trying to help him out of the jam. check it out
