At an Austrian boys' boarding school in the early 1900s, shy, intelligent Törless observes the sadistic behavior of his fellow students, doing nothing to help a victimized classmate—until the torture goes too far. Adapted from Robert Musil's acclaimed novel, Young Törless launched the New German Cinema movement and garnered the 1966 Cannes Film Festival International Critics' Prize for first-time director Volker Schlöndorff.

Grandious Drama about a Student of a Austro-Hungarian Internat who gets fascinated about Power and Humaliation when the Students of German Ethnicity torture and abuse a Jewish Student who stole Money from one of them

Volker SchlÃ¶ndorff (of The Tin Drum fame) directed this excellent film about a turn of the 20th century school for boys in Austria. A student is bullied and tortured by a group of fellow students after being caught stealing money from one of them. The title character watches from a distance as the cruelty takes place and doesnâ??t really do anything to stop it. All of the actors are excellent (most of the students are non-professional) and the direction is also pretty impressive debut from Schlondorff. Itâ??s a well written film about a student trying to understand human nature and the elements of good and evil. Iâ??m thinking Iâ??ll have to watch this one again, it seems like a film that will get better with repeated viewings.

Der Roman ist ein Meisterwerk, der Film handwerklich tadellos und mit famoser Bildgestaltung. In seiner Zeit zweifelsohne von Bedeutung, aber letztlich hat SchlÃ¶ndorff Musil nicht viel hinzuzufÃ¼gen. Aber wer hÃ¤tte das schon? (Achja, Michael Haneke kÃ¶nnte sicher einiges daraus lernen...)

Based on the novel "Confusion of young Torless" by the great R. Musil this is Schlondorff's first movie. Not for everyone. The acting by the leading actor is fantastic: a German Hamlet. I especially liked the imaginary numbers allegory, and the mathematics teacher in the movie.

Examination of how people engage in and allow cruelty to happen. Beautifully shot, penetrating and heartbreaking. All these young men and the terrible things they are capable of doing - applicable to Nazism, soldiering, prison abuse, etc. The black-and-white photography makes the film's beauty clash with its harsh subject matter. Plus, Barbara Steele makes a supremely odd appearance as an insightful prostitute.
