You Will Be My Son (2011)

Paul de Marseul, a prestigious wine-maker and owner of a renowned chateau and vineyard in Saint-Emilion, is disheartened by the notion of his son Martin taking over the family business. Martin does not seem to have inherited the qualities that Paul esteems in a wine-maker: persistence, creative insight and technical prowess matched with passion for the job and the product, and Paul frequently reminds him of this, whether explicitly or in subtle gestures. When Philippe, the son of his manager, appears at the vineyard, Paul leaps at the chance to name him as his successor, neglecting the wishes of his own son...

It all ends in tears, bouquet'd with irony, wisdom and bleak comedy.

This is a very odd film, None of the 4 main characters is in the least bit likeable, a trait reserved for the the two supporting female roles. The story concerns a self obsessed old man running a vineyard who so detests his own son he would rather anyone ran it or no one ran it than he inherited it. No opportunity is missed to ladle on the bitter nature of this man and the ripples that sends through everyone who has anything to do with him. I'd suggest sending it back... it's corked.

Great movie for wine enthusiasts and Francophiles. Plus, the family saga is even better. Lives up to critical acclaim.

Legrand pays homage to this talent by packaging him with a fine script, a strong supporting cast and a rich production that make this fraught wine world both thrilling and chilling.

You Will Be My Son is the sort of dark and twisted familial drama that only the French seem capable of fully realising.
