Franco gives one of his most subtle performances yet as a recovering-alcoholic father, and the three young newcomers’ performances are honest and affecting, capturing what it feels like to be adrift and on the verge of adolescence.

It's an interesting effort with a clear portrait of pre-adolescent curiosity, but it's not something to be viewed casually, as the feature's patience with tone takes some getting used to.

This movie doesn't deserve a star. 3 of the strangest kids you'll ever see in your life. Pinching each other's Peckers wich I didn't know kids did. I had never seen kids doing that when I was growing up in the 70s. You have one in the closet child molester that has a kid come over to read comic books after school every day. James Franco's son's step dad is a child molester and so is his friend talking about some kids penis. And the third kid's dad on the computer is a qustion mark he might be an in closet child molester also trying to do hook ups on the computer who knows. So if all the dads are like this all the kids are like this what are we trying to portray . Hands down the weirdest movie that should never have been made. James Franco if you're trying to get something out from your childhood go see a psychiatrist and quit producing movies.

At first this movie seemed promising, but I lost interest quickly because of how slow paced it is. The scenery is beautiful as the movie was filmed on location in Yosemite national park but the rest fell flat.
