X: The Unknown (1956)

Army radiation experiments awaken a subterranean monster from a fissure that feeds on energy and proceeds to terrorise a remote Scottish village. An American research scientist at a nearby nuclear plant joins with a British investigator to discover why the victims were radioactively burned and why, shortly thereafter, a series of radiation-related incidents are occurring in an ever-growing straight line away from the fissure.

A paint by numbers atomic era sci-fi/horror film. Seriously imagine a scene from any cold war sci-fi movie? That scene is in this movie.

Nice, creative 50s s.f. with a seething blob melting people down. What more could you possibly want?

This movie reminded me of The Blob (1958) and I wouldn't be shocked if they got some ideas from this movie. Nuclear radiation seems to be the main theme for these type of movies from the 1950s, but this creature is more like a blob from underground that feeds off radioactive material. In the movie the blob kind of looks like a giant marshmallow, but toward the end you get a more close up look at the creature. This was a so-so film, not horrible, but borderline for me.

If you imagine the central character is Bernard Quatermass, it's a very good film

Early genre film from Hammer is an intelligent science-fiction mystery in the mold of Nigel Kneale's Quatermass series. It has it's slow, talky moments, and the ending is pretty anti-climactic - but the intriguing scientific mystery of Jimmy Sangster's smart script and the effective atmosphere and production values - including some pretty good special effects and superb, crisp black and white cinematography - keep things moving. Great piercing score by James Bernard.
