Army radiation experiments awaken a subterranean monster from a fissure that feeds on energy and proceeds to terrorise a remote Scottish village. An American research scientist at a nearby nuclear plant joins with a British investigator to discover why the victims were radioactively burned and why, shortly thereafter, a series of radiation-related incidents are occurring in an ever-growing straight line away from the fissure.

After a series of prolonged climaxes, with its potential victims staring directly into the camera and shaking with fright, the "Unknown" finally emerges as a type of rolling rubber mattress, disappointingly unhorrific in content and appearance.

Despite its absurd storyline, it's a surprisingly entertaining film that won't deaden your brain cells even if it's a trashy B film sci-fier.

Another gem amongst the large number of high quality, british science fiction stories from the fifties. A fissure opens up in a quarry where an Army platoon are training. A large, gooey jam-like monster emerges and proceeds to terrorise the nearby scottish communities. As the creature consumes energy it grows, and soon tries to devore a nuclear power station. The acting is good qaulity, it has a decent musical score to compensate for the low-budget special effects and best of all it was a defining piece of hammer-horror.

Meh...not my favourite sci-fi movie that's for sure. I wanted a bit more science in my fiction to make this radioactive slime creating trouble to be believable.
