Writing With Fire is at its best when emphasizing the barriers these women have to overcome daily to fulfill their desires to be journalists, and showcasing the importance of Khabar Lahariya’s work where corruption runs amok.

At a time when the profession faces increasing dangers in India, the film’s faith in the powers of grassroots journalism is nothing short of galvanizing.

Whether the pen is mightier than the sword may be up for debate, but as this engaging and hopeful documentary by Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh shows, words have the power to change things when wielded carefully.

You can’t help be inspired by their courage under fire from all angles. Seeing these women smile in the faces of men telling them what they’re doing is wrong or refusing to understand the nuance of something as simple as filler shots for professionally edited interviews is as potent as them giving each one the middle finger since their presence in the news world is that and more on its own.

This is a definitive documentary about women getting it done. It revolves around an entirely woman-operated news reporting service in India consisting of lower caste members who will not relent to expose injustices around the country. Working with little knowledge of the latest technology, with little support from outside, and often without electricity or running water, they teach a tremendous lesson for anyone who thinks the odds are insurmountable, because they never are if you have the tenacity and problem solving that these women demonstrate in the film.
