Wild Horse, Wild Ride (2012)

100 Days. 100 gritty souls. 100 wild mustangs. That's the premise of the annual Extreme Mustang Makeover, a competition that challenges horse trainers - both pros and amateurs - to each tame a totally wild horse in order to get it adopted into a better life beyond U.S. Government corrals. Intimately following a handful of participants in the 2009 event from their first uneasy meeting with their horses and up through the competition and adoption, the film documents the deep and profound bonds that can develop between man and beast.

Touching, interesting, captivating. For anyone whose heart has ever been touched by a horse... bring the Kleenex!

...how I wish they'd addressed just why anyone would bid against these selfless trainers for their horses, but these animals are beautiful and Dawson and Gricus make a great case for what can be accomplished with a lot of love and patience.

If this sounds like the premise of one of those tiresome Discovery Channel docu-tainments, it's because it essentially is, only heavily abbreviated to fit the feature-film format.

Not entirely sure why the story took so long to be released. It covers a 2009 wild mustang competition and isn't released until 2012. I never knew about this competition before and am still a little confused about how these people say the horses go to better homes after being broken, but they never explain why the horses were ever endanger in the wild. It was interesting though and some of the people they cover for the contest were pretty insane.

Frustrations abound with this limited film, but Wild Horse, Wild Ride does one thing exceptionally well, and that is convey the emotional bond between trainer and horse.
