Where Do We Go Now? (2011)

In a remote, isolated Lebanese village surrounded by land mines, Muslims and Christians live together in peace. Funny, beautifully filmed and great political comment with a deft, rather than sledgehammer approach. Hope it gets a general release in Australia.

A story about tolerance that needs to be seen. While most international critics say the film over simplified its profound subject, i believe Nadine Labaki, Rodney El Haddad and Jihad Hojeili created a fable (a very touching fable) where tolerance between different religions is a must... and i believe this is the most accessible way of showing firstly Lebanon, and then the world, how important the issue is.. whether you're Muslim or Christian. Black or white. Cheesy review? Perhaps... but its the truth... there's no other way they could have done it without falling in too deep within its subject. I must also add that the style is somewhat a mix between Emir Kusturica and Giuseppe Tornatore... not sure if that gives her directing uniqueness but frankly who cares.

A group of brave women who struggle, plot, keep secrets and bury their own pain to keep the peace in their small isolated village... Amazing movie, not too musical

"Where Do We Go Now?" walks a fine line from scene to scene. It's religious subject matter is undeniably touchy, but director Nadine Labaki and co. confront these age old issues with lighthearted farce, sentimentality, hard drama, jarring musical numbers and no little whimsy. Few films could have such element coexist to positive results, but Labaki uses them to strengthen the film. They don't come off as superficial and compliment her vision. This is a great little film that deserves to be seen for a myriad of reasons, most of which is it's impressive thematic balancing act. If you are looking for a stern, serious condemnation of religious indifferences, look elsewhere. "Where Do We Go Now?" is a parable that plays by it's own rules, in it's own world, but screams just as loud.
