When We Were Kings (1996)

It's 1974. Muhammad Ali is 32 and thought by many to be past his prime. George Foreman is ten years younger and the heavyweight champion of the world. Promoter Don King wants to make a name for himself and offers both fighters five million dollars apiece to fight one another, and when they accept, King has only to come up with the money. He finds a willing backer in Mobutu Sese Suko, the dictator of Zaire, and the "Rumble in the Jungle" is set, including a musical festival featuring some of America's top black performers, like James Brown and B.B. King.

Excellent documentary that captured the essence of Muhammad Ali at his finest! All documentaries (especially sports documentaries) should strive for the level of excellence set by Leon Gast.

Ali was slightly before my time. So I did not really understand him and the political aspect of his career until I see this. It also helped to see how Goerge Foreman transformed himself from that angry boxer to the comedian!!!

"Ali Bom i ye" This means Ali kill him. When we were Kings is the documenary about of the most famous fights of all time, the Rumble in the Jungle. It follows Ali as he traines to fight the monster that is George Foreman. Ali was the Greatest champion of all time, he could defeat his you with his mind and taunts long before you stepped in to the ring with him. Foreman was having non of this. Long he for his foreman grills, Foreman was a monster. He hit so hard that he would cave in the heavy bag. For the first time Ali was scared of his rival, knowing that he will be destroyed if he went toe to toe with Foreman, Ali created the "Rope a dope". He would lean way back in the ropes and let Foreman tire himself out. During the 8th round Ali whisperd to Foreman, "Is that all you got?" It was, and Foreman lost the fight. For any Boxing fan like myself this is a must see.

Awesome documentary. Tonnes better than that piece of crap film with Will Smith playing Ali. I especially like how they interviewed writers like Norman Mailer who gave such evocative descriptions. When I watched this I could feel the electricity that everyone must have felt when the whole event of the fight took place. Overall I think it does a very good job of conveying an important moment in sports, american and black history.
