When We Were Kings (1996)

It's 1974. Muhammad Ali is 32 and thought by many to be past his prime. George Foreman is ten years younger and the heavyweight champion of the world. Promoter Don King wants to make a name for himself and offers both fighters five million dollars apiece to fight one another, and when they accept, King has only to come up with the money. He finds a willing backer in Mobutu Sese Suko, the dictator of Zaire, and the "Rumble in the Jungle" is set, including a musical festival featuring some of America's top black performers, like James Brown and B.B. King.

Excellent film. The cultural significance of this fight is often overlooked. You had two sides of Black America represented. Well, you had the "Black" (Ali) side and the "American" (Foreman) side going one on one in the Motherland. The documentary was very well put together and truly deserves the praise that it received.

"Ali Bom i ye" This means Ali kill him. When we were Kings is the documenary about of the most famous fights of all time, the Rumble in the Jungle. It follows Ali as he traines to fight the monster that is George Foreman. Ali was the Greatest champion of all time, he could defeat his you with his mind and taunts long before you stepped in to the ring with him. Foreman was having non of this. Long he for his foreman grills, Foreman was a monster. He hit so hard that he would cave in the heavy bag. For the first time Ali was scared of his rival, knowing that he will be destroyed if he went toe to toe with Foreman, Ali created the "Rope a dope". He would lean way back in the ropes and let Foreman tire himself out. During the 8th round Ali whisperd to Foreman, "Is that all you got?" It was, and Foreman lost the fight. For any Boxing fan like myself this is a must see.

the best documentary about the greatest sports figure of our lifetime. michael jordon, lance armstrong and tiger woods fade away in comparison to the courage, charisma, humor and athleticism of ali. this movie centers on his bout with foreman in zaire but is about much more. ali is at his peak of intelligence, bravery and social criticism. an icon and hero for the ages.
