What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy (2015)

Can you imagine what it means to grow up as the child of a mass murderer? Hans Frank and Otto von Wächter were indicted as war criminals for their roles in WWII. Nazi Governors and consultants to Hitler himself, the two are collectively responsible for thousands of deaths. But what stood out to Philippe Sands were the impressions they left on their sons. While researching the Nuremberg trials, the human rights lawyer came across two men who re-focused his studies: Niklas Frank and Horst von Wächter. The men hold polar opposite views on the men who raised them.

William Faulkner's oft-cited quote has rarely been more apt: "The past is never dead. It's not even the past."

What is it like to grow up as the son of a senior Nazi, with atrocities on your family conscience? In this powerful documentary, the British lawyer Philippe Sands meets two men living in the shadow of the Third Reich in very different ways.

What starts out as a genial documentary about two sons of high officials of the Nazi Party soon turns chilling in the gripping and compelling "What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy."

John DeFore 05 Nov 2015

What begins as a friendly trip grows increasingly tense as the men visit sites of mass murder.

Martin Tsai 05 Nov 2015

Sands' scripted narration sounds detached and dissociated from the grief, frustration and anger he sporadically displays.
