What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy (2015)

Can you imagine what it means to grow up as the child of a mass murderer? Hans Frank and Otto von Wächter were indicted as war criminals for their roles in WWII. Nazi Governors and consultants to Hitler himself, the two are collectively responsible for thousands of deaths. But what stood out to Philippe Sands were the impressions they left on their sons. While researching the Nuremberg trials, the human rights lawyer came across two men who re-focused his studies: Niklas Frank and Horst von Wächter. The men hold polar opposite views on the men who raised them.

What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy wields a power that towers above many other small movies. It may not be the large definition of cinematic, but it is still a true film.

[Wächter is] a frightening example of how the denial common to fascist regimes can endure long afterward.

A really good documentary where a lawyer who has lost his relatives during the WW2 holocaust meets with sons (which are now in their old age) of two German high ranking officers which were involved in mass murders of jews and other crimes in WW2. One of the sons condemns his father, while other tries to find explanation and reasons why his father wasn't as bad throughout the whole movie. This movie really makes you think and see how some people can be naive or try to find explanations where there are none.

In a clip from What Our Fathers Did: A Nazi Legacy I noticed that Horst von Wächter states that his father had "strong connections with the Vatican where his father eventually took refuge and died there". The Vatican has always denied that they gave refuge to Nazis but here is proof that they did. A good reporter would follow up on this statement and try to expose the huge connection between the Nazis and the Vatican.

A hard, unsparing watch, but rewarding in the way it pushes each man to find common ground in the darkest corner of history.
