By the time we make it to the present, oddly represented by a towering digitized city and a handful of white children playing in an idyllic American setting, it becomes clear Mallick has little space for the multifaceted human race in his gorgeous cosmos.

Malick seems to see everything on a cosmic and microscopic scale simultaneously. Drop him in the middle of a suburb and he’ll consider the magnificence of the children playing, the beauty of the grass, and the centuries it took for the rocks to form. That’s why it’s always going to be a rare gift to look at the world through his eyes — especially when he lets the images speak for themselves.

If the feature film reached for, and often failed to achieve, great emotions to match its imagery, the non-contemplative Imax Experience seems even farther from this goal. Vastness and infinity are all fine and good, but the beauty of the universe tends to feel monstrous and inhuman without an element of human chaos to counterbalance it.

[Director Terrence] Malick claims to have worked on the concept for this film across 40 years yet it somehow has a slapped-together feel. IMAX may well be part of the future of cinema but hopefully films like this will quickly become a thing of the past.

This was awful. There was no flow. No explanation of anything. Huge pieces of history were missing and sequences were out of order. Even knowing what was supposed to be happening I could barely follow what was being depicted. I still don't understand what the point of the movie was even after seeing it. The only positive thing was that some of the imagery was beautiful. Hence the full star instead of half.
