Vital (2004)

A young man awakens in the hospital after an accident wipes his memory. Fascinated by a textbook full of drawings of dissections, Hiroshi is drawn to medical school. There he catches the eye of a fellow student, but it's another who becomes his obsession: the dead woman on the cadaver table.

The most accessible and straightforward film from Shinya Tsukamoto, but certainly not his least dense. VITAL is take on the more commercialized horror films from Japan, but it's still brimming with Tsukamoto brilliance - the scenes of dissection filmed as love scenes come across particularly unnerving. I know Tadanobu Asano is called "the Japanese Johnny Depp", but I've always found him more like Tobey Maguire - they both possess a similar inexpressive nature in their acting styles.

A pretty good film. Tadanobu Asano gives another great performance and really shows his skills as an actor.

Aside from the attractiveness of Tadanobu Asano and the two female leads, this film has a lot to reccommend itself. I enjoyed the very emotionally stilted acting, and has plenty of tension to keep the viewer hooked.
