Virunga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa's oldest national park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and a contested ground among insurgencies seeking to topple the government that see untold profits in the land. Among this ongoing power struggle, Virunga also happens to be the last natural habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The only thing standing in the way of the forces closing in around the gorillas: a handful of passionate park rangers and journalists fighting to secure the park's borders and expose the corruption of its enemies. Filled with shocking footage, and anchored by the surprisingly deep and gentle characters of the gorillas themselves, Virunga is a galvanizing call to action around an ongoing political and environmental crisis in the Congo.

Virunga is a potentially paradigm-shifting entry in the genre that deserves the kind of support and attention Blackfish and The Cove received.

As an assignment for my AP Environmental Science class, I clicked on this documentary with no high expectations since most documentaries end disappointingly or are executed poorly. However, this documentary was very different. It focused on a very much real and hot issue, the conservation of National Parks. More specifically, it focuses on mountain rangers trying to protect the Virunga National Park, home to the world's last mountain gorillas. Since this is the last of their species, it is very important for rangers to try their best to protect them and I think it is very touching to the audience, the dedication and love these rangers have for the park and the mountain gorillas. I highly recommend watching this documentary as it is very insightful and touching!

Muito mais do que um registro sobre a segurança dos gorilas da montanha, Virunga faz um retrato avassalador da delicada situação político-econômica na qual o parque do título está envolvido em relação ao Governo do Congo e às milícias rebeldes financiadas por companhias multinacionais que visam a exploração dos recursos naturais do país a qualquer custo.
