Virunga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa's oldest national park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and a contested ground among insurgencies seeking to topple the government that see untold profits in the land. Among this ongoing power struggle, Virunga also happens to be the last natural habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The only thing standing in the way of the forces closing in around the gorillas: a handful of passionate park rangers and journalists fighting to secure the park's borders and expose the corruption of its enemies. Filled with shocking footage, and anchored by the surprisingly deep and gentle characters of the gorillas themselves, Virunga is a galvanizing call to action around an ongoing political and environmental crisis in the Congo.

Muito mais do que um registro sobre a segurança dos gorilas da montanha, Virunga faz um retrato avassalador da delicada situação político-econômica na qual o parque do título está envolvido em relação ao Governo do Congo e às milícias rebeldes financiadas por companhias multinacionais que visam a exploração dos recursos naturais do país a qualquer custo.

Virunga is a visually appealing and intense documentary that brings light to some of the Congolese's struggles. Through the undermining of the rangers, big oil companies, and hands on reporting, Virunga is able to capture the turmoil that plagues the land. Virunga's use of dual point of views creates a great segue between the civil unrest and the park rangers' struggles, as they combat the SOCO company trying to move in on park territory and attempt to preserve one pf Congo's National Parks. By illuminating the conflict that the Congolese rangers are having, Virunga brings attention to the fact that there is not enough being done to protect wildlife. Virunga uses the intrigue of warfare and the compassion of the rangers in order to shed light on the importance of preserving nature.

Really enjoyed this Oscar nominated documentary. Beautiful scenery and a powerful, thoughtful, and emotional story that follows the guards at Virunga National Park in Congo who dedicate and risk their lives to protect the gorillas of the park. Highly recommended!

While I'm somewhat wary on biased documentaries, it's hard to fault Virunga for this when it's morals seem so correct. It's a moving, tense, and visually gorgeous doc that studies juxtaposes the guilt of human greed against the naive innocence of animals. While it won't break new ground thematically, it never hurts to be reminded of the awful things that corporate corruption can do.
