Virunga in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa's oldest national park, a UNESCO world heritage site, and a contested ground among insurgencies seeking to topple the government that see untold profits in the land. Among this ongoing power struggle, Virunga also happens to be the last natural habitat for the critically endangered mountain gorilla. The only thing standing in the way of the forces closing in around the gorillas: a handful of passionate park rangers and journalists fighting to secure the park's borders and expose the corruption of its enemies. It's a live action war movie and an environmental thriller all in one film. A+

I give Virunga a strong 4 stars out of 5. The documentary about the Congo War and the struggles that face the animal preserve excels in showcasing the dangers of oil exploration, the tragedy of war, and the corrupt business that revolves around poaching. The soundtrack, composed by Patrick Jonsonn, complemented the suspenseful and emotional moments scattered throughout the film. My only complaint is the lack of narrative given towards the affected locals from nearby villages, since they are the ones that come face-to-face with the dilemma of saving the primates or gaining the support of the guerrilla. Other than that, the film excels in teaching the importance of preserving the ever-shrinking population of these primates and the current controversial events plaguing the Congo.

Very well made documentary shining the light on the horrors of poaching and even war. Some of the scene are breathtaking in a good way and a bad way with shots of animals living their lives while others lives' have ended by poachers. Nominated for the Oscar and well deserved
