Vacuuming Completely Nude in Paradise (2001)

Tommy is a vacuum cleaner salesman gripped by the fever of closing the deal. He lives on puffa rice stored in his glove compartment, listens to motivation tapes of his own voice shouting 'Sell, sell, fucking sell' and his punters are up to their eyes in debt. Even Tommy admits his 'soul's in holes'. He's sure the Golden Vac (the holy grail of vacuum salesmanship) can be his - if only he hadn't been saddled with Pete, a meek sales trainee trying to help his girlfriend quit stripping.

This movie rocked. Combines door-to-door vacuum sales with techno music. That's pretty original. It's fitting that I'm working on Glen Gary, Glen Ross is my scene study class. Salesmen are crazy.

Danny Boyle has one of the coolest careers in film ever. In his films he has tackled zombies, space, heroin addicts, India, and that's not even looking at his whole filmography. So with this one, his topic of choice was unbalanced vacuum salesmen. Visually you can see this as a definite precursor to "28 Days Later"- the digital, grainy look and wild experimental hand held cinematography are very similar. But story wise, this is the hardest to peg of all of Boyle's films. It's mood veers from humor to drama very quickly leaving it with a rather uneven feeling. It feels like an absurdist rendition of "Death of a Salesman," honestly. The performances are good, Timothy Spall especially stealing the show as a rather loathesome but captivating individual. It is not a perfect film, but it's worth seeing for Danny Boyle's involvement and some rather unexpected laughs.

"GLAAAD As Owwaiiys to help Muh Freends -n- nyborrs!" Hence this review. Looks like a lot of fun, very tongue-in-cheek with some crazy dark moments. Can't wait!

This movie is what I imagine would happen if someone told British sketch comedy writers to make a movie on the theme of "Death of a Salesman" without having ever seen the play. It's bizarre, manic, and hilarious! Timothy Spall continues to bring humanity to what could be a completely despicable character.

While Boyle sometimes veers into the erratic with his video cameras getting angles all over the place as if covering someone's breakdown, it's Timothy Spall who walks away with this picture (sure, Michael Begley doesn't slum it either).
