In interviews with a few of the key players, the film desensationalizes the story without really demystifying it. It's an intriguing but shallow examination that never really finds a point of view about its subject.

A complex story with some fascinating true-life characters raises this documentary above some pretty cheesy and pretentious stylistic flourishes. Whatever your opinion of these people and their music (I found them to be pompous losers, but incredibly interesting for that reason) the subcultural movements and controversy they spawned is incredibly compelling, especially interesting when they're forced to look back on it years later.

Just saw this last night. A good documentary on the black metal genre addressing the misconceptions and media spins concerning a series of violent crimes associated with this sub-culture (for lack of a better description). Aside from a few long shots of... well, nothing, this film moved along at a good pace. There were some clever scene cuts and the alternate ending was the better of the two. Overall, a good informative flick that could entice the viewer to want to know more about the genre.

There's a good documentary to be made about the black metal scene, and this one kind of is. But it's sloppy, and too inwardly focused too much of the time. Still, there's some arresting scenes to be found here: Fenriz (of Darkthrone) having to deal with the mundane aspects of black metal's emergence as a trend, Varg Vikernes (of Burzum) calmly explaining the murder that he's serving time for, and a disturbingly gruesome sequence in which Frost carves himself up with a knife) as part of an art installation. Still, the film's missing something - more fire, perhaps?
