Until the Light Takes Us (2008)

Chronicles the history, ideology and aesthetic of Norwegian black metal, a musical subculture infamous as much for a series of murders and church arsons as it is for its unique musical and visual aesthetics. This is the first film to truly shed light on a movement that has heretofore been shrouded by rumor and obscured by inaccurate and shallow depictions. Featuring exclusive interviews with the musicians themselves, Until the Light Takes Us explores every aspect of the controversial movement that has captured the attention of the world.

It gave a pretty decent cinematic look into a subculture that I am sure that 99% of the world's population doesn't even exist or if they do, they just have stereotypes of white kids in makeup and long hair screaming about killing their mothers. The use of ambient music instead of black metal was a brilliant touch and added to the darkness. The story telling was slow at times and somewhat confusing but it was compelling. The book "Lords Of Chaos" was a better look at it all but the movie was worth the watch, especially if you want to learn about something new.

The world is overstocked with flamboyantly wasted rock The The world is overstocked with flamboyantly wasted rock stars and heavily strapped rappers, but few of them can hold a guttering candle to the ghoul-boy nutters of Norwegian Black Metal.

This is a very well shot doc that parallels its subjects in terms of its grim, detached nature. Unfortunately, it also parallels its subjects in terms of intrigue -- and none but the infamy of black metal and its unholy lore are very interesting.

Fascinating documentary about the black metal scene in Norway however it some of it flawed just focusing too the crimes and church burnings rather than documenting on the history, the traits and seeking other regions rather than Norway.

Until the Light Takes Us tracks the deafening sounds and shocking anti-social behavior of the metal music clan who stand against their country's behavioral norms and cultural traditions.
