Before he left for a brief European visit, symphony conductor Sir Alfred De Carter casually asked his staid brother-in-law August to look out for his young wife, Daphne, during his absence. August has hired a private detective to keep tabs on her. But when the private eye's report suggests Daphne might have been canoodling with his secretary, Sir Alfred begins to imagine how he might take his revenge.

This type of comedy in anyone else`s hands would be a Hitchcock like thriller. But Preston Sturges has a grumpy composer played by Rex Harrison think that his wife is having an affair, and while he performs a concert he construct vivid fantasies of how he will deal with the situation. The movie`s middle portion is the best part, all of these deranged and wicked scenarios. When the climax comes along, it ends rather ant-climactic like and it feels all moot.

Is it wrong to love a movie where the main character imagines increasingly effective ways to murder his wife whom he believes is having an affair this much? And did I mention this is a comedy with some hilarious musical moments and horribly escalating slapstick skits thrown in? I should have, because this is one black comedy that I cannot get enough of. Though Sturges is just kind of blah in my book, he hit the nail on the head with this movie and Rex Harrison is absolutely awesome. In fact, I think a whole star might be awarded to Harrison's hair, both on his head and on his face in this movie. The man has a way with hair! And with comedic timing, as you catch how his plan is not quite how he imagined it once it is set in motion. A definitely overlooked classic.

Completely brilliant and damn near perfect film by Preston Sturges. One of the most savagely unpredictable films I've ever seen, and bitingly funny as well as disturbing. "Ahead of its time" is an understatement. Sturges' dialogue is remarkably well written. And the structure plays with your expectations like you wouldn't believe.

Not much liked at the time, but a small masterpiece just the same in its skilful blending of moods, genuinely moving and quite beautifully played by Harrison and Darnell.
