Unfaithfully Yours (1948)

Before he left for a brief European visit, symphony conductor Sir Alfred De Carter casually asked his staid brother-in-law August to look out for his young wife, Daphne, during his absence. August has hired a private detective to keep tabs on her. An unusual combination of slapstick and high brow verbal humor from Sturgis. The movie goes to some pretty dark places in the fantasy sequences. Rex Harrison is absolutely brilliant in the lead role and gives a tour de force performance. Unbelievable camera moves for its time.

I saw my least favorite and my favorite Sturges film on the same night! This movie was great! It intertwines fantasy and present reality perfectly, and along with the amazing score it is one of the funnest movie experiences one can have! The build up to the last 20 minutes is so well-constructed that when it comes, you are laughing your butt off. This is one of those movies that has something for everyone.

Is it wrong to love a movie where the main character imagines increasingly effective ways to murder his wife whom he believes is having an affair this much? And did I mention this is a comedy with some hilarious musical moments and horribly escalating slapstick skits thrown in? I should have, because this is one black comedy that I cannot get enough of. Though Sturges is just kind of blah in my book, he hit the nail on the head with this movie and Rex Harrison is absolutely awesome. In fact, I think a whole star might be awarded to Harrison's hair, both on his head and on his face in this movie. The man has a way with hair! And with comedic timing, as you catch how his plan is not quite how he imagined it once it is set in motion. A definitely overlooked classic.

A delightful romp through a frustrated conductor's imagination, and a hilarious comparison between that imagination and reality.

Brilliant movie. In my top 10! Probably in my top 5! You just don't expect this sort a movie for that day and age. I love Rex Harrison. He is a magnificent actor.
