Two Family House (2000)

Buddy Visalo (Michael Rispoli) is a factory worker, a frustrated crooner who once had a shot at the big time. Buddy's dreams of greatness have been reduced to an endless series of failed moneymaking schemes. His latest is buying a two-family house for him and his wife, Estelle (Katherine Narducci) and converting the ground floor into a neighborhood bar where he can perform. The wrench in the works is that he also inherits the upstairs tenants, Mary,a pregnant Irish girl fresh off the boat (Kelly Macdonald) and her abusive, alcoholic husband, Jim (Kevin Conway). As Buddy's gang of Italians tries to handle the situation, the girl goes into labor, and a baby is born, forcing them all to confront the limits of their tolerance and compassion.

The sappy trappings that director Raymond De Felitta piles onto the burgeoning romance story line kills any spark that remains, despite the best efforts of the cast to keep it real.

The story, which deals straightforwardly with racism, miscegenation, adultery and consumerism, is a fascinating combination: a movie with an almost Capraesque heart and pristine, almost stagey lighting schemes, that addresses uncomfortable moral issues with today's perspectives.

I read a review of this film when it was released (to a few theaters) that conveyed the beauty of the portrayals, the script, and the film itself so well that I never forgot that review. When I finally saw this film, I knew why the critic had fallen in love. Michael Rispoli gives the finest romantic male lead performance since Cary Grant in "Affair to Remember". It's not overtly sentimental, it's not predictable at all, and it's not even fantastical. It is grounded in reality, well-written & directed, and contains fine performances. Underrated, overlooked, and almost forgotten unless you have a crush on Michael Rispoli like me and "Lose her" become the most lovely line of all time.
