Two by Poe and two very good movies with equal shares of flaws

2: I'd give the Romero half a 1.5 and the Argento held a 2.5, which means both are a disappointment, especially considering the films are inspired by Edgar Allen Poe stories. The production values seem incredibly low and almost everything about the film has a tacky 80's feel. Romero's picture is less than riveting even if it does have it's moments. He couldn't sustain the suspense or horror though. Argento does a markedly better job, partially due to Keitel I'm sure, but the picture is a pale shadow of his best work. Not much here is visually, aurally, or thematically inventive. The real strength of the film lies in Poe's tale.

I wasn't too surprised to find that I liked both parts of this film, regardless of the negative buzz.

not quite as good a argento/romero collaboration as one would have hoped, with romero's segment being somewhat slow to build. argento's segment is a treat though, throwing in as many poe references as possible and having a bad lieutenant-esque role once again from keitel.

Two Edgar Allen Poe stories directed by horror legends Romero and Argento. Argento's piece 'The Black Cat' tops Romero's segment but both directors appear past their prime. I'd easily recommend the CREEPSHOWS over this one.
