Tsar (2009)

In 16th-century Russia in the grip of chaos, Ivan the Terrible strongly believes he is vested with a holy mission. Believing he can understand and interpret the signs, he sees the Last Judgment approaching. He establishes absolute power, cruelly destroying anyone who gets in his way. During this reign of terror, Philip, the superior of the monastery on the Solovetsky Islands, a great scholar and Ivan's close friend, dares to oppose the sovereign's mystical tyranny. What follows is a clash between two completely opposite visions of the world, smashing morality and justice, God and men. A grand-scale film with excellent leading roles by Mamonov and Yankovsky.

This Russian epic about Ivan the Terrible offers a new angle and has other merits, but inevitable comparisons will be made with maestro Eisenstein classic version.

As a huge fan of period pieces I get extra excited whenever I get to see a historic account from Russia! They often enjoy high production quality with a sense of authenticity that is rare to the genre. "Tzar" is no exception, along with excellent performance by Pyotr Mamonov who basically singlehandedly carries the movie on his shoulders! However the rigid style of narration doesn't help the film to reach its ultimate potential, unfortunately, leaving one with two very long and slow hours.

I saw this with my wife (a non Russian speaker) she did not like this movie at all. The poor translation ruined this fantastic historical drama

Film trÃ¨s prenant, surtout si on ne connait pas grande chose sur Ivan le Terrible. Le film respecte l'histoire apparemment, et n'en fait pas trop dans la description de la violence du tsar, mais le malaise est bien ressenti par le spectateur. Un seul point nÃ©gatif... la musique ! Sinon c'est Ã voir :)

Boring, too cruel and dark for the mass public. However the movie is actually pretty good for a Russian historical film production - this time surprisingly no moral messages are pouring from the screen and the narrative of the film is quite close to the history.
