Rough-hewed but naturally inspirational, True Son gains heft from its portrait of a city sharply segregated by race and income.

Alan Scherstuhl 30 Oct 2014

With sharper on-the-ground footage, True Son might have been as sharp a doc as it is inspiring a story.

Joe Neumaier 30 Oct 2014

Watching politics and the people in it can be disheartening and depressing. Here’s an antidote: This energizing, uplifting, sharp documentary from director Kevin Gordon.

Michael Rechtshaffen 06 Nov 2014

As inspirational pieces go, the journey taken by the affable Tubbs proves hard to resist, even as the film, in its hustle to get to the finish line, occasionally prevents viewers from feeling this underdog story's emotional victories.

"True Son" is there to capture why all hope shouldn't be lost and thrives on the excitement of witnessing a new star being born.
