Trixie (2000)

Passed over at work and numbed after she witnesses a colleague's murder, security guard Trixie Zurbo takes a relatively easy job at a lakefront casino, working undercover keeping an eye out for pickpockets. Trixie meets an assortment of colorful regulars: Kirk Stans, the casino's lounge act who drinks too much and is a dead-on mimic; Ruby Pearli , a glamorous, young and knowledgeable barfly; and Dex Lang, a raffish ladies' man who pays attention to Trixie in a way that's hard for her to ignore.

Trixie (Emily Watson in her pleasant to watch role), come private detective, tries to unravela never ending stream of seemingly unrelated dramas. She has a bombastic Senator (suitably portrayed by Nick Nolte) in her sights. The highlight of the film comes at the end when Trixie finally succeeds in solving the crime(s) and thereby driving the Senator crazy. Watching this was close to a waste of time.

A movie built on one joke -- an old one -- and an incoherent, even idiotic plot.

In a summer of cardboard figures in splashy spectacles, that makes for a refreshing change, an intriguing, entertaining and altogether sweetly mystifying misfire. In other words, another quintessentially Alan Rudolph picture.

The acting is solid and the heroine's quirky dialogue is amusing for a while. But repetitious writing and a weakly constructed story turn the promising premise into a disappointing mishmash of crime, politics, and show business.

Classic Rudolph: a tone of sweet-edged, slightly kooky melancholy, a terrific cast mostly left to its own devices and a few intriguing moments. Not, I'm sorry to say, a movie.
