Treading Water (2001)

Casey has rejected her privileged upbringing and restores old boats for a living. She lives a cozy life with her beautiful social worker girlfriend Alex until her stuffy family demands that she come home for Christmas – without Alex. Casey is a longshorewoman who seems to have everything she wants; she and her girlfriend Alex are very much in love. But there's nothing like the holidays to bring out the drama of the average family. Casey lives just across the bay from her upper crust New England family. The proximity seems no accident: Casey can't quite let go, despite her family's judgmental and inescapable hold on her otherwise independent and unconventional life. When the family reunites for Christmas, the unwrapping of presents takes a back seat to the unraveling of emotions.

It pretty much sucks. And not like most lesbian movies that suck but it's nice to see yourself represented in the media (that, and girl-on-girl sex scenes.. yey). No, no, this one just plain sucks. Coming out and staying out teenager drama. Bleeeh.

While this is not the best lesbian movie I have seen, it most certainly is not the worst. It's a slice out the lives of these characters, and the bigotry that comes from Casey's mother.Unfortunately I also know a thing or two about judgmental parents (thankfully, Casey only had her mother to deal with, but what a hateful woman!), and the illusions and lies one has to maintain in order to maintain a relationship with the family. This all struck me as very real. What was refreshing, though, was that there was no drama surrounding the very existence of the main characters' relationship - they weren't just starting, neither of them was straight, they didn't break up or defect. They had a stable, loving relationship which, like most relationships, has stresses and strains to deal with. How nice, finally! And even in the sex scenes, the director saw no need to titillate the audience - again, just tender, real loving. Bravo!

There is some believable tenderness between the two leads, but most of the acting is dire. The writing (Julia Hollinger) is flat and cliched, the editing is poor.
