Travellers and Magicians (2003)

A young government official, named Dondup, who is smitten with America (he even has a denim gho) dreams of escaping there while stuck in a beautiful but isolated village. He hopes to connect in the U.S. with a visa out of the country. He misses the one bus out of town to Thimphu, however, and is forced to hitchhike and walk along the Lateral Road to the west, accompanied by an apple seller, a Buddhist monk with his ornate, dragon-headed dramyin, a drunk, a widowed rice paper maker, and his beautiful daughter, Sonam.

14 July'07. The movie from Bhutan! Full of beautiful cinematography and life philosophy. Simple story, yet so true and powerful. People can be happy without public transportation, cell phones and Facebook.

A very sweet movie. All the characters are really likable--lovable in fact. The pacing is slow which makes the frustration of the frenetic main character all the more interesting. I started out frustrated and grew patient at the same rate as he did.

This is a wonderful movie, a journey both spiritual and physical. Norbu does a masterful job of weaving the parallel stories together into a beautiful fabric. His previous release PhÃ¶rpa (The Cup) (1999) is also worth seeing. A more linear story and an allegory for how Bhutan, a very isolated kingdom, is being brought into the modern age.
