Travellers and Magicians (2003)

A young government official, named Dondup, who is smitten with America (he even has a denim gho) dreams of escaping there while stuck in a beautiful but isolated village. He hopes to connect in the U.S. with a visa out of the country. He misses the one bus out of town to Thimphu, however, and is forced to hitchhike and walk along the Lateral Road to the west, accompanied by an apple seller, a Buddhist monk with his ornate, dragon-headed dramyin, a drunk, a widowed rice paper maker, and his beautiful daughter, Sonam.

Uses a folktale or parable to impart its message about the simple pleasures in life, and it's the telling of that story that makes it watchable and worthwhile.

A movie with a lesson. Loved the movie scenery, truly breathtaking..

It was difficult to understand this kind of gender. Most of the film was boring and slow. I didn't like the story.

In interviews, Norbu has compared the editing process to meditation. While his pacing echoes that of polestars like Ozu and Makhmalbaf, his edits make striking events out of mundane motions like hands moving under running water and mouths meeting cups of butter tea.

Gene Seymour 27 Jan 2005

The scenery is breathtaking, the amateur cast is appealing, and the road trip, though as shaggy and unruly as the vagabond official's haircut, emits a pleasant buzz.
