Travellers and Magicians (2003)

A young government official, named Dondup, who is smitten with America (he even has a denim gho) dreams of escaping there while stuck in a beautiful but isolated village. He hopes to connect in the U.S. with a visa out of the country. He misses the one bus out of town to Thimphu, however, and is forced to hitchhike and walk along the Lateral Road to the west, accompanied by an apple seller, a Buddhist monk with his ornate, dragon-headed dramyin, a drunk, a widowed rice paper maker, and his beautiful daughter, Sonam.

a very interesting film, especially for those into foreign flicks. a very well-put-together movie that really puts Bhutanese cinema on the map

The first twenty minutes of this movie made you feel that the whole film was going to be very boring and uninteresting. Luckily though after that it all went from bad to amazing. The story became very interesting and incredibly enjoyable to watch. All the acting was very good. The characters all make you smile, if not at the beginning then by the end they would be sure too. A small problem this movie had though was that the subtitles were very small. The best part of this movie was the ending because they concluded it very nicely and left you a bit for your imagination. I also found the music very good. All in all this entire movie was very interesting, I would like to even see this again. A great movie that everyone should see! Two thumbs up! :)

This is a wonderful movie, a journey both spiritual and physical. Norbu does a masterful job of weaving the parallel stories together into a beautiful fabric. His previous release PhÃ¶rpa (The Cup) (1999) is also worth seeing. A more linear story and an allegory for how Bhutan, a very isolated kingdom, is being brought into the modern age.

The scenery is breathtaking, the amateur cast is appealing, and the road trip, though as shaggy and unruly as the vagabond official's haircut, emits a pleasant buzz.
