Transylvania (2006)

Zingarina arrives in Transylavania, accompanied by her close friend Marie and her guide and interpreter Luminitsa. She is not there only to visit this region of Romania but to trace her lover Milan, a musician who has made her pregnant and who left her without a word of explanation. When she finds him back, he brutally rejects her and Zingarina is terribly upset. She leaves her two companions and having become a wreck she hardly survives by following a wandering little girl. Her destiny changes for the best when she meets Tchangalo, a traveling trader...

No vampires. Asia Argento in a fearless performance opens a window into the Romanian gypsie culture as the protagonist tries to find her husband who misteriously disapeared without knowing she was carrying his child. Her journey n the people she meets on her road are captivating, unique n interesting. The movie will keep u guessing until the end what is going to happen next: extraordinarily fascinating!!

Clunky dialogue and weak plotting impede some of the more visceral and visual pleasures here but this is another fine example of Gatlif's osmotic, unique, connective, free-form cinema.

Oh how i love the music of this region. And to be immersed in it in this movie. I feel like I experienced a bit of life as it really is there. I almost never feel that way in a movie. Like it's real. And Asia, I love you for playing someone fragile, breakable, brutal, and ass-beating all at once. Zingarina's life I both yearn for and am terrified of. a wonderfully complex feeling.
