There is a whole lot of Takei in between the early days of Sulu and the current era of hashtagged witticisms, and that is vast middle section is chronicled in the new documentary To Be Takei.

To Be Takei is as natural as Takei is in front of the camera and during public speeches. It's vibrant, interesting, and enjoyable.

At first it seems like an odd choice for a documentary, but Takei manages to be interesting enough and godamn likable enough that he carries what could be a rather bland film. He's led a more interesting and more important life than most actors, and it was interesting to hear about his struggles for reperations for Japanese internment (which he experienced as a child) and gay rights. We also see Takei's story as an Asian in Hollywood, and his unexpected role as a king of the internet. Takei is one of the most delightful personalities in Hollywood, and even if you don't think you'd be interested in his story, his charm will make you interested in a story that is actually worth hearing.
