Funny, entertaining look into the childhood, personal life, and career of the surprisingly prolific character actor. Obviously his Star Trek work figures heavily, but is in no way the exclusive focus. His endearing sense of humor and smart wit are probably the main attraction here.

Actor George Takei, best known for his role in Star Trek, has his life story told here in this solid, yet sometimes too brisk documentary. The man has lead an interesting life, from being put in an internment camp as a child for being Japanese, discovering as a teen he was gay, and then working his way through Hollywood while hiding this major part of himself for decades, and then eventually coming out and become something of a gay icon (particularly on the internet). The problem with the documentary is that it feels to quick, sometimes glossing over significant moments, or at least feeling like things are being glossed over. I sort of felt like I knew most of the info about Takei before watching this, and while it was entertaining, I don't feel I learned too much more about him, beyond a few personal tidbits here and there. Entertaining for any Takei or Trek fan, but doubtful that you'll walk away more enlightened than when you went in.

The documentary To Be Takei serves to add considerable dimension to the man best known by many as Hikaru Sulu from Star Trek.

I like George Takei. He always feels genuine to me even when he's mocking himself. As this documentary tells it the actor's dark past has given him both a boundless creativity & an almost stubborn optimism.
