A look at an actor who broke racial grounds as his life reflecting his career yet can't get over the amount of political agenda that plagues the focus on character. Still enjoyable, comical with genuine interactions.

A fascinating look at a fascinating man. Takei is a true American original with an interesting story growing up gay and closeted and being subjected to the Japanese internment camps.

Here's a great documentary about an amazing human being, his struggles in a Japanese interment camp, his early career and political activism, his resilience in the face of adversity and his great sense of humor. He's been one of the most influential public icons in recent memory. And even at 77, has a lot of life and love to give.

A very enjoyable and pacy documentary that offers far more substance than one might think. The combination of humour in seeing present day life of its subjects with the grim past suffered by Mr. Takei is extremely powerful. If there is one criticism it's that the overall structure of the film is somewhat confusing in its logic. In particular, Mr. Takei's recollections about his time in the internment camps is sprinkled about throughout the picture, and the logic behind where they're placed in the film rather escaped me, other than perhaps to break up the serious and humourous parts. If that's the logic, I'm fine with that, although I'm not entirely sure it is the reasoning behind these editorial choices. In some ways, its biggest strength is to show the complexity of people. That in this case, Mr. Takei's life has been far more than just Star Trek and Facebook posts, and that there is a need for both fun and seriousness in life.

I like George Takei. He always feels genuine to me even when he's mocking himself. As this documentary tells it the actor's dark past has given him both a boundless creativity & an almost stubborn optimism.
