Brilliant parody of rock music and rock musicians. As mocking and cutting as the movie, it still manages to express show the genre some love. My favorite moment is when David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), playing and singing on stage, urges Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) with a nod of his head to come out of the wings and join him on stage. Nigel had quit the band in disgust after David's meddling wife had attached herself uninvited to the band. Nigel hesitates but then walks across the stage, straps on a guitar and plays in unison with David. It's a special moment in a special film.

I had a chance to revisit this wonderful mockumentary on a flight back home from Asia this week. A great comedy is one where you keep laughiing at the same gags over and over again even though you've seen them time and again. THIS IS SPINAL TAP offers up those types of moments in spades.

11/10. One of the greatest comedy's of all time. Original, hilarious and to this day still the standard to which all mockumentaries are judged by.

Not only does this succeed at being a satire of rock bands, it also acts as a satire of documentaries themselves. There are many scenes that are memorable and easily quotable lines. A silly, ridiculous, funny mock-rockumentary.

Mockumentaries today are a little overdone. Shows like The Office, Modern Family, and Parks and Recreation have proved their point with the genre. And even though This Is Spinal Tap might not be the original mockumentary, it still outdoes any mockumentary production to have ever existed. Rob Reiner takes you on a satirical look into the lives of British rock musicians, and he hits it on the head. Many rock stars today watch this movie and think, "Whoever made this must have been there, because this is exactly how it was." Christopher Guest has had many other successful projects similar to Spinal Tap (like Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and Waiting For Guffman). But Spinal Tap remains as one of the most original and clever comedies to hit the screen. Check out the soundtrack while you're at it, it's Weird Al on steroids.
