This Is Home's creators, a team of mostly women, have wrought an intimate story of the four families and their new American lives, a story which gives essential attention to the larger implications of the Syrian refugee crisis.

Eve MacSweeney 21 Jun 2018

Shiva, in this quiet, thoughtful film, has given us a gift in laying bare the extremity of their transition. The more she illuminates the nuances, the better we see.

Amber Wilkinson 02 Feb 2018

It is Shiva's lightness of touch that sells the film. Just as she lets the politics of the situation show through by examining their impact, her unobtrusive, observational style also helps the families feel free to recount their stories of trauma.

Robert Abele 11 Apr 2018

The small industry of documentaries about Syria shouldn't deter you from the affecting pull of This Is Home: A Refugee Story, Alexandra Shiva's heartwarming if conventional portrait of four refugee Syrian families navigating new lives in Baltimore.

Christopher Llewellyn Reed 05 Jun 2018

Shiva, intimately ensconced with her subjects, reminds us that we are all one species, no matter our differences. Home, thy name is humanity.
