This Divided State follows the controversy surrounding Utah Valley State College's invitation to liberal filmmaker Michael Moore to speak on campus. Though UVSC is located in one of the most conservative counties in the United States, vehement opposition to Moore's visit was much greater than anticipated. Equally surprising, however, was the overwhelming support for Moore, vocalized by students and community members previously considered "apathetic." Debate between Moore supporters and Moore protestors raged openly in the media and public forums. Death threats, hate mail, bribes, and lawsuits were all candidly captured on film.

A good topic for a documentary, plenty of beef here. Still..maybe it was a bit too long. Many bizarre opinions, many colorful characters. They could have gone deeper in discussing why are there so many people who seem to be unable to have rational dialogue, people who resort to threats and shouting right from the start. Moore is a pretty good speaker, knows how to take his audience. Maybe they could've voted among students whether they want moore for a visit?

Interesting look at how a narrow minded community in Utah (what a surprise) tried to prevent Michael Moore from speaking at a university. Obviously this flies against the principle of free speech, but that never stopped the zealots out there. It really is quite simple, go listen if you want and don't go if you don't want to. I guess them exercising their right to protest is a form of free speech and expression. It is amazing that alot of the protesters there hadn't actually seen any of MM's movies or read his books. It kinda makes it hard to take them seriously.

Very good documentary! For me, not coming from the US, it's really frightening to see how narrow-minded and ignorant some americans (religious right-wing conservatives) can be... Awkward to see!

It's a discomfiting film, bringing up all the ugly emotion of last year's electoral shouting match, concentrated in one town in one state and in one short 88-minute film.
